What do members of the Hebrew Roots Movement believe? What do they teach and preach? What do they expect other HRM members to practice? Do HRM groups agree with each other in every point of teaching and belief?

This is the second part of our special series concerning the Hebrew Roots Movement. If you have not read the first part, we invite you to look here first for background on the movement.

The first section of our series will focus on the beliefs of the Hebrew Roots Movement along with criticisms from a variety of writers. The second section of our series will focus on my findings from years of researching HRM.

God (Yaweh)

Let’s begin by looking at what HRM believes about God (Yaweh). At this point in our research, we are using written quotes (with links to Internet quotes) from different leaders in the HRM .

** Many of the HRM groups do not include a statement of beliefs on their websites or in their books, so we are referring to those sites and books where what they believe is stated clearly. We don’t want to misrepresent what they believe.

We believe in ONE God, Yehovah, as He revealed Himself in the Holy Bible (Deut. 6:4). He is God the Father and the only true God, as stated by Yeshua (John 17:3). Together with Yeshua, they are one (“echad” in the Hebrew) meaning compound unity of oneness. Yehovah is NOT a trinity. The teaching of the mainstream churches that God is a “Trinity” composed of three Persons (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) is in gross error and is a pagan concept going back to Nimrod, Semiramis, and Tammuz – the original pagan “trinity” of father, mother and child.

William F. Dankenbring, Triumph Prophetic Ministries

We affirm that ethical monotheism is the cornerstone of all biblical faith: that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of the prophets, and the God of the apostles is the one true God.

Hebraic Heritage Christian Center

There must always be but one God, the Father, and but one Lord, Jesus the Messiah, and that walking after Him requires the indwelling presence and empowerment of the Spirit of Truth.

Center for Judaic-Christian Studies

We believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Founded In Truth

Our God and His plan for the ages has been around a long time. Our God bows to no one. He is more powerful than any other force in existence. Our God’s wisdom has proven to outlast and outshine any and all methods and philosophies mankind has come up with.

Yeshua Israel

We believe that there is ONE Creator, GOD, Who reveals Himself in the dimensions of Father, Son (The Messiah), and Holy Spirit.

Acts II Ministries

There is one Almighty. Revealed by His Name as YHVH.”

Manna from Heaven Ministries

We affirm that the Heavenly Father’s Name is Yahweh, Psalm 68:4; Isaiah 42:8; Jeremiah 16:21. Yahweh is His Name forever, and is the verb of existence, Exodus 3:14-15; Isaiah 63:12. He is the Supreme Ruler over everything. Worship is to be directed toward Him and He is to be venerated above all, Exodus 20:5; Deuteronomy, 6:4, 13; 2Kings 17:36; Psalm 99:9; Matthew 4:10. We are commanded to use and revere Yahweh’s Name, Exodus 20:7; Leviticus 22:2; Deuteronomy 28:58; Psalm 105:1; Isaiah 52:6; Matthew 6:9; John 17:26.

Jesus (Yeshua)

The doctrine of the Holy Trinity has become the most defining doctrine of Christianity. Indeed, it is the ultimate test of orthodoxy. Nevertheless, it must be rejected on the basis that it is unscriptural even though it has been generally accepted for 1,500 years. It must be replaced with the nomenclature revealed in the writings of the New Testament in order for believers to return to the Hebraic roots and function of that early church.

Ken Garrison, Hebraic Roots

We believe that Jesus (Yeshua) is the only begotten Son of God and the Messiah who is the Word and the firstborn of all creation (Col 1:15), the beginning of the Creation of God (Rev.3:14), who became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life: no one can come to the Father, Yehovah, except through Him (John 14:6). In Him, dwells the fullness of the Godhead (Col 2:9). We believe in His virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14), that He led a sinless life (2 Cor. 5:21) and that through His atoning death (Heb. 9 and 10) and bodily resurrection, we are saved by grace through faith in Him. We believe in the physical/literal return of Jesus Christ as the King of Kings to rule on this earth from Jerusalem.

William F. Dankenbring, Triumph Prophetic Ministries

“We affirm that fully within the context of biblical monotheism, the fullness of God was made flesh in the person of Jesus (Yeshua) who was and is both the divine Messiah and the risen Lord for all humanity.”

Hebraic Heritage Christian Center

“Yeshua created the heavens and the earth (John 1:3,10, Colossians 1:15-16). Yeshua made covenant with Abraham (Galations 3:16). Yeshua gave the Torah at Mt Sinai (Matt 1:21, Luke 2:11, James 4:12). Yeshua is the right hand who defeated Pharaoh’s army at the Red Sea (Exodus 15:3-4). Yeshua is the glory of God (Revelation 21:23) who led the children of Israel by the cloud by day and pillar of fire by night (Exodus 13:20-21, Exodus 24:15-17). Yeshua is the angel (Hebrew word means ‘messenger’) of the Lord who appeared to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:2) and told Moses that He was the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Exodus 3:14-15). Therefore, Yeshua must be Yahweh Elohim who became flesh and dwelt among men (John 1:14).”

Eddie Chumney, Hebraic Heritage Ministries International

“We believe Yeshua’s origin is divine and from The Father … We believe Yeshua is the Messiah (anointed) spoken of by the prophets.”

Founded In Truth

“Yeshua‘ the Messiah is precisely what He claimed to be, the manifestation of the Word of God, YHVH the Creator of all that there is. Yeshua‘ claims attributes that God alone claims to have.”

Brad Scott, The WildBranch Ministry

“Jesus is 100% God, and 100% man (a true mystery). He is one with the Father and the Holy Spirit. They are not separate “gods,” nor is the Father the “old god” and Yeshua the “new god”.”

Torah Class

“We believe in the Deity of Y’shua Ha’Maschiach (Jesus Christ) [John 1:1-18], and His virgin birth [Isaiah 9:6; Matthew 1:18-25]. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life – no one comes to the Father except through Him [John 14:6; John 6:29, 40, 44; I John 5:11-12].”

Acts II Ministries

“There is one Almighty. Revealed by His Name as YHVH. In the incarnation of our Savior, Yahshua the Messiah. His virgin birth, sinless life, suffering and death on the execution stake, and subsequent Resurrection. Which bought our redemption.”

Manna from Heaven Ministries

“We affirm that the true Name for the Messiah is Yahshua. Yahshua literally means, “Yahweh saves” or “Yahweh is salvation.” His Name is a contraction of YAHweh and hoSHUA. He literally came in His Father’s Name, John 5:43. Yahshua is the only name under Heaven that offers salvation to all those that would call upon it, Acts 4:12. He pre-existed before His earthly birth and was the spokesman for the Father in the Old Testament, Genesis 1:26; 19:24; Proverbs 8:25; Micah 5:2; John 1:1-3; 8:58; 13:3; 16:28-30; 1Corinthians 10:4; Colossians 1:15-17. We believe that He came in human form and was born of a virgin by Yahweh’s own power, Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23; John 17:5; Philippians 2:5-7. Yahshua lived a completely sinless life, Isaiah 53:9; 1 Peter 2:22, and died upon the torture stake through which we have atonement for our sins, Isaiah 53; Hebrews 9. On the third day He rose from the tomb to be the mediator between mankind and Yahweh, Matthew 12:40; John 14:6; 1Corinthians 15:1-8; Hebrews 3:1; 4:14.”

Yahweh’s Restoration Ministry

Jesus was ‘birthed,’ but not created. Arius was not completely wrong. Much of what Arius believed was right. God did ‘birth’ Jesus. God gave Jesus all authority for the purpose of ultimate redemption. God gave Jesus His divinity (fullness). God decided that His fullness would exist in Jesus.

The Council of Nicea began the formula of the Holy Trinity. It didn’t exist prior to 325 AD. The 4th century Church invented the Trinity to control Christianity. Arius had a much more biblical view of who God is, but the 4th century councils opposed Arius and his followers. The councils intended to destroy the Nazarene church. However, the Nazarene church were the Judaizers, which was the biblical church.

Tzemach Institute for Biblical Studies, New Covenant Gospels, Class 5: John’s Gospel (Pt. 1)

“What if I told you that the ‘Trinity’ is not based on Scripture; in fact the word ‘Trinity’ does not even occur in Scripture. Nowhere is it to be found, matter of fact. If you look at history, what we find is this. The ‘Trinity,’ the concept of a ‘Trinity,’ is not something we find in the New Testament. This is something that developed over hundreds of years by the way. As a matter of fact, the ‘Trinity’ within Christianity was not developed until 300 years after Messiah came and died for our sins … But here’s the reality of the ‘Trinity’ and that is it is based on pagan ideas and concepts.”

Pastor Randy Folliard, Yahweh’s Restoration Ministry (see video below for full context of belief statement)

The Holy Spirit (Ruach)

“The Holy Spirit is the power of Yehovah which He uses to strengthen, teach and comfort all Christians and is also used to beget new Christians as future sons and daughters of God. The Holy Spirit is the power, essence and mind of God.”

William F. Dankenbring, Triumph Prophetic Ministries

“We affirm that God manifest as the Holy Spirit is entirely in the context of biblical monotheism.”

Hebraic Heritage Christian Center

“As the Author of Scripture, He can illumine the student’s understanding as he searches God’s Word.”

Shofar Ministries

“We affirm that the Holy Spirit is an invisible force proceeding from the Heavenly Father. It is in essence the mind and power of Yahweh, which is also bestowed upon the Son, Luke 24:49; John 15:26. The Holy Spirit is placed within those who are baptized into the saving Name of Yahshua the Messiah through the laying on hands of the presbytery, Acts 2:38; 5:32; 8:17; 19:6; 1Timothy 4:14; 2Timothy 1:6. Through this power a person receives Yahweh’s strength to overcome sin and live a repentant life. The Holy Spirit is the acting agent by which Yahweh and His Son accomplish their will.”

This is an example of the teaching of an HRM group and demonstrates the spiritual danger of false teaching that lurks in some of the movement. The group behind this video is Yahweh’s Restoration Ministry located near Holts Summit, Missouri. [Please read Important Notice below the video.]

[Important Notice: Faith and Self Defense does not agree with the teaching in this video. We’ll explain why in the second part of the series where we share our findings from years of researching the beliefs and teachings of HRM.]

Next Time

In the next part of our special series, The ‘Hebrew Roots’ Movement, we’ll hear from some of the critics of HRM as to their beliefs concerning God (Yaweh), Jesus (Yeshua) and the Holy Spirit (Ruach).
