There is something extremely ‘personal’ between Satan and the Son of God. We saw that in the way they addressed each other in Job chapters 1 and 2. Satan approached God along with other angels. God asked Satan a question and the devil answered. Satan also made some strong accusations in his responses to God. The Lord ‘allowed’ Satan to test Job, but put limits on how far the devil could go.

Why? I think it’s personal. We see other times when God and angels converse, but never to the level of what we see between Satan and God. The way the devil tested the Son of God in the wilderness (e.g. Luke 4:1-13) is another demonstration of the personal animosity between them. What could have caused that? Let’s look deeper into the ‘deep things.’

The Purpose

“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” 1 John 3:8

That matches perfectly with what God told the devil in the Garden of Eden –

“And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.” Genesis 3:15

As we’ve learned from many verses in the Bible (e.g. John 1:1-4; Colossians 1:16; Revelation 4:11), the Son of God created ‘all things’ that are in heaven and that are on earth, ‘visible and invisible, thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.’ All things were created through Christ ‘and for Him.’ That means the Son of God created the ‘heavenly host,’ including the angel Satan. And notice – ‘for Him.’ Christ, the Son of God, created Satan ‘for Him.’

Think about that for a minute. God’s Eternal Plan included creating a supernatural being that would commit such evil on earth that the Son of God would be ‘manifested’ so that He ‘might destroy the works’ of that angel. Why would God do that? The Apostle John, writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, wrote that ‘For this purpose the Son of God was manifested.’ That goes to the ‘deep things’ of God – His ‘deep-laid plans.’ We may not understand exactly what God’s plans, but we can trust that His purposes are ‘good’ and not ‘evil.’

The Bible tells us that God ‘will never do wickedly’ (Job 34:12).

“Far be it from God to do wickedness, And from the Almighty to commit iniquity.” Job 34:10

God ‘cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone’ (James 1:13). Yet, at the same time we know that ‘the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one’ (1 John 5:19). The Apostle Paul even called Satan ‘the god of this age’ (2 Corinthians 4:4). How can all of this be true?

I think it’s personal. It’s personal in a way we may not fully understand until we are in God’s presence in Heaven. As Moses told the children of Israel –

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.” Deuteronomy 29:29

There are some things that God keeps secret while we’re on earth – to reveal to us in Heaven. One of those things may be why the problem of ‘good and evil’ is something personal between the Son of God and Satan.

It may be that the Son of God created Satan to be one of His most powerful and beautiful creatures – knowing (because Christ is Omniscient) that the devil’s power and beauty would lead to personal pride that would cause him to sin against his Creator.

There are some scholars who believe Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 refer to Satan prior to the creation of humans and to earthly rulers (e.g. King of Babylon; King of Tyre). Of both descriptions, I think Ezekiel 28 may give us some insight to what’s ‘personal’ between the Son of God and Satan. Look at the wording –

“Thus says the Lord God: You were the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: The sardius, topaz, and diamond, Beryl, onyx, and jasper, Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes Was prepared for you on the day you were created. ‘You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, Till iniquity was found in you.” Ezekiel 28:12-15

God described this created being as –

  • the seal of perfection
  • Full of wisdom
  • perfect in beauty
  • in Eden, the garden of God
  • Every precious stone was your covering
  • The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes Was prepared for you on the day you were created
  • You were the anointed cherub who covers
  • I established you
  • You were on the holy mountain of God
  • You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones
  • You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, Till iniquity was found in you

This description does not sound anything like a human being – especially the King of Tyre. Even Adam who God created in the Garden of Eden is not described that way. Adam is never called a ‘cherub,’ especially a ‘cherub who covers.’ The word ‘cherub’ is used dozens of times in the Bible and each time it is used for a supernatural, angelic being. Exodus 37:9 describes the ‘cherubim’ as ‘covering the mercy seat’ with their wings.

Consider that for a moment. The Ark of the Covenant that was so precious to God included two cherubim facing each other as they bowed before God. Why? Cherubim had a special place of ‘covering’ in God’s Eternal Plan. The cherub of Ezekiel 28 was ‘anointed’ to ‘cover’ (סָכַךְ – cakak, ‘overshadow, screen, cover’). What if God created Satan for that exalted position, but the angel became proud and God found ‘iniquity in him’? What if, as Ezekiel heard, God cast Satan ‘as a profane thing out of the mountain of God’ (Ezekiel 28:16)? The word ‘profane’ is חָלַל (chalal) and means ‘to bore, pierce, wound.’ The Son of God cast Satan out of the mountain of God as a ‘wounded’ being. I remember Jesus saying, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven’ (Luke 10:18). That may refer to when the Son of God cast Satan ‘as a profane thing’ out of the mountain of God.

I can see how that negative exchange between the Son of God and Satan could have led to a ‘personal’ vendetta on the part of the devil that involved the earth and humans. God created humans ‘in Our image, according to Our likeness’ (Genesis 1:26). It could explain why the devil quickly moved in to deceive Eve and force the ‘fall’ of the human race into spiritual separation from God. Satan probably wanted to destroy anything God created in His ‘image’ and ‘likeness.’ It would also explain why Satan has spent thousands of years relentlessly roaming the earth looking for humans to ‘devour’ (1 Peter 5:8 ). It would also explain why God’s purpose in revealing His Son would be to destroy the ‘works of the devil.’

Satan knew within moments of successfully deceiving Eve that God was going to destroy him through the ‘Seed of the woman.’ That explains why the devil has been so intent through ancient history on killing or derailing every male that looked like they might be the ‘Seed’ who would destroy him. We can tell from how Satan tested Jesus in the wilderness that he wanted to derail Him by getting Jesus of Nazareth to worship him (Luke 4).

Even the demons realized the true identity of Jesus of Nazareth and what He was going to do to them –

“What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?” Matthew 8:29

One of the most personal and insightful statements by Jesus about Satan is what He said to a crowd of Israelites –

“Jesus said to them, ‘If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.” John 8:42-47

The Greek word for ‘beginning’ is ἀρχή and means ‘from the beginning point, from the origin, the initial starting point.’ When was that ‘starting point?’ Was it when the Son of God cast the angel as a ‘profane thing’ from the mountain of God? Was it when the devil lied and deceived Eve and caused humans to die? Was it when Satan encouraged Cain to murder his brother? Whatever Jesus was referring to, we know that the devil is the father of lies and a murderer.

Future Torment

If the demons know that the Son of God is going to ‘torment’ them in the future, you can be sure that Satan knows that as well. God made it clear through the writings of the prophets, the Words of Jesus Christ, and the preaching and writing of the apostles what the devil will face at the end –

“And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” Revelation 12:7-9

“The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” Revelation 20:10

The devil knows what awaits him, but that doesn’t mean he is going to stop being evil or doing evil. Satan is evil and will do evil until he is ‘cast into the lake of fire and brimstone.’ Of that we can be sure.

AI Statement

I’ve been writing professionally since the 1960’s — long before Artificial Intelligence was a ‘thing’ that might concern readers. However, since it has now become a ‘thing,’ let me assure you that I do not use AI to write any of my blog articles. I research material the old-fashioned way. I study the topic, confirm what I find from multiple reliable sources (usually at least 3-5 independent sources — known as ‘triangulation’ in the world of journalism), then report it while disclosing the sources and sharing quotes from some of the sources.

WordPress does offer an image service where the writer can ‘generate’ an image. I have used that on occasion when appropriate and identified the image as AI Generated. I have also found a few AI charts that I confirmed as accurate and used them as well. I also identify them as AI Generated. If I ever share a direct ‘quote’ from AI (which is rare), I will also identify the quote as AI Generated. Otherwise, what you read in blog articles is my personal way of communicating — something I’ve done for almost 60 years. Hope that helps explain how I view and use AI.

Next Time

What this does is put people in the middle of a supernatural battle. The way God wants us to join in that battle is one of the ‘deep things’ of God. We’ll see what that looks like in the next part of our series, ‘Understanding the ‘Deep Things’ of God and Satan.’
